Atharva - A Prodigy who taught me " The Value of Answers"

Amidst the drumroll & high notes of the Saxophone, a little boy kept giving me furtive looks. Perhaps wondering why I was humming to the elegant notes that was being rendered by the musicians. As I looked at him, his furtive looks turned into a mystical gaze – the eyes having scores of unanswered questions gleamed in them. As I stretched my hand to get to know each other, the child was promptly introduced by my wife as Atharva, the son of one of her cousins.

The name rang bells in my ears – when asked what his name meant the child rattled off a series of Sanskrit expressions that astounded me. Once he got to know that I was from the medical fraternity, the child shot out a question as to how, when and why do we give oxygen to patients? A question that I have never encountered with the medicos too. As I gave him clarity, Atharva was absorbed in thought, his expression suggested that he was imagining how he could apply what he heard from me in providing relief to his grandfather. The inquisitive mind never stopped questioning on a variety of medical procedures that kept me on my toes to answer some that really indicated the intellectualism of the child were – how will such a long needle not poke into the bone when injection is given to the arm? How do you bandage a wound on the upper portion of the forearm without it falling down to the wrist when the arm is lowered? The questions posed by him were clear of his intent, content and the feeling of truthfulness. The barrage of questions made me so happy and made me believe that he is poised to become a wonderful doctor who can be a gift to mankind. But when I asked him – what would he like to become when he grew up? Promptly he answered “I want to join the Indian Army & protect my country”. He wanted to wipe out the wrong doers and thieves such that our country is safe & secure always. Such ideological responses coming from a 4 year old astounded me. The clarity of thought, the purpose and the act/ deeds he wished to accomplish as an Army Mans duty was simply overwhelming to listen to.

As his father joined us in listening to what his son had to say and what he was troubling me on, Atharva asked a beautiful question. A question which none had answered when he had posed it to them. Why is the soldier draped in the tri-colour when he dies but we are draped in a white cloth when we die? To answer this question was not easy & so began a dialogue between Atharva & me so that the child not just gets to know the answer but internalizes it too. It was now time for me to ask the questions so Atharva answers. Here is the dialogue that transpired between Atharva & Me

Me:- What is the duty of a soldier of the Indian Army?

He:- To serve the Country?

Me:- You can serve the country in any way but then – Why does he need a gun?

He:- To kill the enemy?

Me:- Is that all? Is there any other thing that he needs to do?

He:- Protect us – all people & land of the country.

Me:- Why the land? What gives soldier the identity that this land is his?

He: The Tri-Colour.

Me:- Good Atharva. You are perfectly right. It is true that the Soldier of the Indian Army has to protect the flag wherever it is and should keep it flying high always. This is because it is what lends him an identity that this is his land and his country – which includes every thing that is present in this country – people and all. Therefore, when he dies on the border he has died for his country and that is why he is draped in the Indian tri-colour. As far as we people are concerned – we live & die for ourselves – our family etc therefore we are draped in another cloth.

The seriousness on his face suggested that the answer gave him the clarity he needed. Atharvas eyes now beamed a commitment, an internal conviction that he too wanted the tri-colour draped but as a sign of victory a brandishing identity that he was to be the Son of India standing guard eternally to protect his motherland.

Atharva taught me a lot that day. His innocence & honesty in asking profound questions which even adults dread suggested never to underestimate the intellectual acumen of anyone – be it a child or an adult. His deep thinking eyes was clear that the child probed his mind to craft the question and ask it genuinely in simple words – This is suggestive to every adult to think before opening your mouth to say anything – the norm “think before you ink” is applicable all the time; along with this, it is also suggestive that even difficult questions can be simple worded and needs to be answered in the same tempo – answer simplicity with simplicity. The way the questions were posed by Atharva was evident that the mind was looking for appropriate satisfiers and not just answers or avoider statements such as “do your homework and its not time to ask questions” or “You will get to know the answers when you grow up” or “Don’t ask such stupid questions, you are asking questions inappropriate to your age” etc etc. This suggested to me 3 very important attributes that parents or teachers need to inculcate – (1.) Don’t drub the child and kill his inquisitive mind just because you don’t know the answers to his questions;  (2) It becomes the duty of the parents & teachers to explore the range of questions, get into knowledge bases and find answers to the questions of the child – the internet, social media and above all the new CHATGPT can be the sources to know the answers and then reply to the child in a manner he understands – this I suggest is because the child considers only his parents and the teachers to be the “know all role models” that instill belief in him easily. And finally (3.) The barrage of questions from Atharva suggested that he had many unanswered questions and just needed someone who could understand his stance and answer the question. By this I understood that “Questions need Answers and Problems need Solutions”. When the child asks questions the parents usually say “this is the problem with my child” but they never say “my child needs answers” one change in this perspective will certainly enrich the child and make him an intellectual. This interaction with Atharva I can never forget – it is after a long time that I found an intellectual being that sounded no less than a prodigy in a child – when channelized he could become one of the greatest contributive visionaries of this great country. God willing 30 years down the line our country may witness another Vivekananda in this child Atharva.

Note:- Atharva hails from a place near Rippon Pete, obscured to the urban habitat amidst the serene western ghats known as Malnad region.

Mother - A Person whom we cant live without...

Although a toddler she took care of her siblings
Skipped school too to meet family's rued ailings
When she excelled in class she hurt boys feelings
In adolescence guys jabbed her heart as their flings

Going to work & growing there was her herculean task

At home too some cultures hid her under a mask

Never was she free to enjoy the worldly sun & in it bask
Nor was she served with things that she did rarely ask

Despite the hardships she scathed through in style

Step by step she progressed with her husband in a file
Held her kids hands till they crossed the educational mile
Supported all at home clearing their problems pile

Those money's she gave when our father did spurn

Cared for our life when frustrated we experienced heartburn
She became our friend our sister & with her it was always fun
When we felt lonely, it was only her we found when behind we turn

She was our Saraswati, Lakshmi & Kali in our life's school

Annapurna was she on whose food for health we'd all drool
As Sarvamangala our apirations she fulfilled unperturbed & cool
A living goddess is she who ensured we don't end up a fool

Very late do we realise there's none in comparison to her

Unique is she in every way who made our lives worthier
She's given her time & poured her life into us & none other
Lets surprise her today, & celebrate to say "You're the greatest mother"

Happy Mother's Day to the one who made things happen to me & transforming me from being worthless to being worthier. Happy Mother's Day to all those mother's too

Abhinandan - To Dr. Venugopal - Vice Chancellor Bangalore University

As part of the Book Abhinandan this poem was written by me towards felicitation to Mr. Venugopal The Vice Chancellor of Bangalore University.

In an era where technology is ruling over knowledge
There indeed was a need to transform the old college
It was to give students & faculty a useful learning edge
Was what Vice Chancellor Venugopal's novel pledge.

With the Bangalore University poised to split into three
New courses too were to become part of this learning tree
Saving careers & students lives due to Covid's spree
Venugopal & his team put all in place creating History

From his bundled achievements he did rise to a gracious fame
Battled unfavourable situations & those who tried to stain his name
With patience & passion, strife & clear vision he won each game
As an individual he entered & a wonderful personality he became.

These lines I've written to you with a deep sense of gratitude
As you've played a role in building us & our attitude
Help students to inculcate good values of greater magnitude
Perform our tasks educating students with humble servitude.

With a heartfelt thanks to you Venugopal Sir for your valued contribution in transforming Bangalore University & putting in on the futuristic pathway. Wishing you a great life ahead.

On Raama Navami

2 Yugas ago on Chaitra Shukla Navami
Was born a pious one among so many
With a voice so polite & sweet as honey
He enchanted all with his form so tiny

With child's toggle when he would walk
In a cutest way he would gurgle & talk
as he grew behind asuras he'd stalk
Protected all refuged behind his back

When 16 he slayed asuras in dozens
Stood guard to Rishis & forest citizens
Was a god of death to all the demons
Revered for his feats by all the heavens

Breaking Shiva's bow he married the divine beauty
Received a grand welcome & blessings in bounty
Embraced forest life unquestioningly as his duty
Though a prince he lived with resource so scanty

His wife's abduction made him teary
The search for her made him weary
Redeemed the cursed ate tasted berry
With a large army to Lanka he did ferry

The war with his wife's abductor's army he had started
Midway his fatally injured brother lay of life depleated
With divine herb his brother & all lives got repleated
With a new vigor the perpetrators army he defeated

After 14years of exile to his kingdom when he returned
The people of khosala to receive him  they stormed
Amidst celebration on the throne as King he adorned
11000 years of a golden age he gave people & governed

Not once he has faltered in all aspects of living by Darma
Never missing on performing his nitya & rajya karma
Practical real life truths he lived & not a fictional drama
Unmatched he only is Puroshottama Raghu Raama

On this day of his birth let us pause our lives & reflect on his qualities, acts, deeds & achievements and see how much we can inculcate those in us to atleast emulate living the pious & worthy life that is Dharmic & Karmic in nature.

Ugaadi - The First Day a New Year as per Hindu Almanac

Here arrives a day that's so dear
awaited by kids adults & the seer
It marks the beginning of a new year
celebrated by all from far & near.

It is a day when Lord Brahma was well seated
On this very day this beautiful world he created
Embedded resources to never get depleted
& take care of it to Lord Vishnu he solicited.

It is from here tithi, vaasara, paksha & maasa mathematically emerged
Combining with the stellar positions in a Yuga they all submerged
For humans to adapt & live in harmony in each of seasons it urged
Unknown fear, inadequacy, sorrow, sickness & all negativity it purged.

Beginning the day with an oil bath makes skin healthy not greasy
Stay in the sun get vitamin D & licking tamarind is best & so easy
Tangy mango pachadi balances your heart to not go risky
Protect from diseases eating mixture of neem flowers, ghee, salt & jaggery

How would the year be get revealed as you read the almanac
How good, bad, problem or without is the year bright or dark
Gifts you ways & wisdom to overcome, stay or change the track
However it ushers in to say UGAADI - meaning a new age is back.

The first day is very auspicious to start anything anew
Enjoy delicacies & chit chat with elders that was long due
With prayers & blessings next year end you'll find fortunes grew
With health, happiness, peace & all may it be your life's radiant hue.

Wishing you and your family a happy & prosperous new year.
May this year bring great cheer, without a tear, absolute no fear, a vision clear, make people dear, good news to hear, a healthy winner, problems don't leer, progress on the steer, blessings of your seer & with god being near.
*"Happy Ugaadi"*

February 14th - The Unforgettable PULWAMA Massacre - Blood stained Valentine's Day

February 14th, called Valentine's day is a day no youngster ever forgets. It is that day of the year that people in love celebrate to express their love for those whom they love.  The boys & girls in love shower gifts, chocolates and heart balloons as an expression of their love. A lot of messages floating on the Social media a week prior to this day surprised me as to how culturally we had changed. The youngsters these days sway in the cultural breeze of the west little realizing that there can be serious meaning and purpose to celebrating this day.

I was at the training center this day, this morning to spend the day with a few immortal souls of the Indian Army..... 10:30 they all came & I didn't know how the feeling was going to be.... Already my heart was weeping as they are all soldiers who have lost their limbs etc working towards protecting us at all times.... This is what I felt during the day & I wrote it at the beginning & end of the day.....

....... A Day to Remember For Bharat......

As I wait for the day to start words fail me & my throat feels parched

Can't say how I'm going to be when I see them in uniforms starched

My body & soul too seem to feel a burning like they've been torched

Wondering how on impossible terrain these souls bravely marched

With tears in my eyes, a weeping heart & brow sweating out

I salute the great sentry boy who is just standing out

Coz even when injured they truly are the most reliable scout

I sleep peacefully inside coz my brother is a guard standing out.

With the convoy slaughtered, bodies strewn of our slain brothers

The valentine's red has got its colour from the blood of our soldiers

The boys coffins too got soaked red with tears of blood of mothers

The tears she shed was to wash the mockery made by leaders & others.

I wish I had another son to could go to Pulwama came mothers whips

What have we done was the only words that somehow escaped my lips

Shaken I was on a war cry salute of a Major with no legs below the hips

Each one there had his own personal sorrow braving all emotional dips

With pomp & cheer everyone felt that it was a day well spent

With emotions treasured I truly understood what Valentine's Day meant

Impressing your love with roses, gifts & love-tidings may be your happy event

But take a moment & offer a wreath to soldiers who to heavens happily went

It is not that one should not give gifts to the love of their life but, all I expect that there can be a much better purpose in that can be far more worthier - that of remembering and celebrating the day with those for whom our lives, our safety and our happiness matters the most.... Just think about it....

HISTORY OF THIS BHAKTIGEET - It was years ago that my revered singing maestro - popularly known as Gartikere Raganna (- the one who taught me, coached me and blessed me to appreciate the beauty of music, the divine soulful exploration through Bhaktigeet) had begun to write a bhaktigeet in the praise of Guru Shri Raghavendra Swamy. He had just completed writing the first verse after which he just stopped, it was as if something within him prevailed where he couldn't write any further.  Decades went by and he could not write further and complete the Bhaktigeet. In the 2021 Guru Shri Raghavendra Swamy's Aaradhana time on the Madhya Aaradhana day he sang the single verse as part of the Ashtavadhaana Seva. He was emotional when I asked him how come this song has only one verse - he told me what happened to him and said I don't know what vidhi (fate) had for him and this bhaktigeet. At this point of time I felt an intense desire to complete this bhaktigeet in the same tempo that befitted the Raaga that it was tuned in.

Finally I wrote the next two verses, modified the repeat verse (mukhda) with an addition and on 5th February 2022 sent it to Gartikere Raganna as a surprise. The greatness of this maestro was that he reworked on the notes and sang the whole bhaktigeet and sent it to me in his recorded voice in the most befitting raaga. This completion of the incomplete song is a my deep gratitude to the great maestro for all that i learnt from him in the field of music and the grace of wonderful raaga's.

The Verse of Gartikere Raganna has been placed in as the last paragraph due to the phrase TORU MUKTI mentioned in the verse.

Lockdown - The days to work on... to live on...

The Corona pandemic that’s gripping the world has created fear in people. Nations getting in a lockdown state with a high level of curfew imposed are adding meat to this fear. Apart from this, the consistent reports on the challenging task on hand, the medical research fraternity has and groping for a cure has further reinforced this fear with uncertainty, thus impairing the very psyche of the people. Well, the fear of not contracting the virus and falling prey to this unknown life threatening invisible enemy has become an even bigger problem on hand. Another major issue that strengthens this fear or rather creates a new mindset is TIME. People who earlier had scarcity of time always quoting “I don’t have time for that or I wish I had time for that etc” were now experiencing a sudden abundance of time. This sudden freedom from being occupied with all other Lockdown conditions has put their mind in a tizzy “what to do with time?”. It is also said “an idle mind is a devils workshop” could this pose a bigger challenge to people – May be….. May be Not…. But the possibility exists.

I found that this issue has never really been looked at by the leaders of the nation (as they are really battling with containing the spread of the virus and working towards making the essentials reach the common man). Neither the news media (though having a geographical presence have infact transformed themselves into a Corona Dashboard – how many infected Vs dead & spread?.... Fault finding with, what the people did/ didn’t do or the misses/ inefficiencies/ wrongs of the Government? Or how & where did the Lockdown fail – apart from this there is hardly any worthy material fed to the common man’s brain) nor the so acclaimed Gurus (– be it Management or Spiritual) have provided respite to the ailing minds of the people. Perhaps the minds of the leadership (national, management & Spiritual) are mummified with draperies of secular emotions that are self-limiting them. So where can we find respite to the inner turmoil then? Is there no one who can guide us through these times and tell us “this is the best for you to do”. Well at this stage it reminds me of one of the most radiant Guru of recent times belonging to Goud Saraswath Brahmin Kashi Mutt named Shri Sudindrateerth Swamy.  His role in uplifting the people intellectually, morally, spiritually, culturally and patriotically has been impeccably well designed and executed. Even during difficult times he proved that with 3 P’s – Patience, Prayer, Perseverance and positivity through group consciousness effort, success is inevitable. Being part of the GSB community I had been a witness to this visionary’s success story.  The entire community who believed in the Pontiff unquestioningly followed every single instruction given to them by him, and, over time they reaped & realized the benefits. The GSB community today is one of the richest in the world – Intellectually, Morally, Spiritually, Culturally and Patriotically; which happened due to each individual (irrespective of age or gender) accepting that it is his/ her individual responsibility to commit to one’s own evolution through DHARMA & KARMA (Duties and Performance).  When we view it from this perspective it becomes all the more relevant for us to adopt these such that individually we become better beings and collectively, we achieve such a rich status as a nation. So what should we do now…..??

The human body deteriorates more due to misuse and abuse than due to proper use. Yoga is not a demonstration kit to be opened and shown only on Yoga Day (21st June every year), it should made our body’s best friend who stays with us and does good daily and with whom we wish to spend time daily. Ideally the air is most refreshing early morning – best to wake up before the sunrises drink 2-3 glass of hot/ warm water (this resolves acidity issues, gastric issues, indigestion & constipation, flushes toxins) and set about doing a bout of pranayama - begin with anulom vilom for about 5 minutes followed by Ujjaiyi for about 5 minutes (this will refresh the brain, calms & stimulates the vagus nerve and cranial muscles, enhances lung capacity. It also nourishes the throat, vocal cords, relieves thyroid problems, asthama, bronchitis, migraine, acidity, anxiety, depression, insomnia, sleep apnea snoring and  regulates Blood pressure too.). Once the body is refreshed its now best to do a set of Yoga Asanas that are strengthening, releasing, rejuvenating awakening and relaxing the muscles and the inner system. However, the best among all of the asana’s is the Surya Namaskaar (initially a set of about 12 should be sufficient that can set the tone and over time it can be witnessed that this improves self-awareness, flexibility, agility, relieves fatigue, lethargy, stiffness, tensions and pain. It also increases the stamina and positive energies required by the body while also flushing the toxins.). The body is now prepared for flight into the depths of silence. Meditate for 20 minutes – among most of the techniques available the simplest, easiest, effortless, following the nature’s way and very effective is Transcendental Meditation technique propounded by Shri Maharishi Mahesh Yogi (this allows the mind to experience unbounded awareness and achieve a state of inner serenity enabling the full functioning of the brain – the benefits of this is simply astounding. It is also a time to offer gratitude to the body that has so far been a good companion). It is best to eat freshly prepared food that is Satvik as our body needs revitalization and rejuvenation that can harbor a healthy mind. Prepared food stored over 3 to 4 hours becomes Tamasik, this when consumed, changes the constituents of the mind’s functioning in a not so beneficial manner. This attunes the physical segment of our being, building resistance to anomalies that can affect the body due to the misuse.

We often forget that when our focus shifts from “I” to “WE” a sea change of benefits come our way. When we are always self-centered or self-focused the mind revolves around “I”- we do everything to satisfy this “I” and end up having “ILLNESSES”. When this shifts to “WE” - we start recognizing, regarding & respecting others. We employ all our resources healthily and judiciously to serve others and this brings “WELLNESS”. It’s so simple to realize this – do we need “I for ILLNESS” or “WE for WELLNESS”. And what best than to begin from home environment. Here I recommend each one of us follow a E3 METHODENGAGE ; EDUCATE ; ENERGIZE . The first step is to ENGAGE into healthy discussions with your family members. Have short intermittent breaks with small eats which allows you all to sit together, chat together and also eat together – there’s an old adage “a family that eats together stays together”. These breaks should be engaged in fun, laughter and enjoyable times (times of your younger days, the days of mischief, the days you enjoyed the most and what you did etc – these will allow your children and your other family members to not only re-live your younger days but also give room to understand you better). In these happy moments the hidden talents of your near dear ones also surface which can be encouraged or unleashed making a personality out of the person. Also engage in activities that allow you to complete some pending tasks at work. Connect up with your work team and certain heads of your business/ job with whom a future pathway can be envisioned. This will lay a strong foundation to the career as well as family ties. This now leads to the second step EDUCATE where you share about your family origins, your customs/ traditions, values, festivals, etc. and helping your children appreciate these, realize the importance of these and inspire them to become custodians of this culture. If we don’t culturize our children then ETHNOCIDE of our culture is evident. It is also time to educate them about the real history of Bharat (prior to this do a bit of studying – not reading; you could learn from researches by Raj Vedam or Stephen Knapp or from the Archeological Society of India etc. where the real history with concrete scientific evidence is available). Tell your children stories of valour, courage humanity, truthfulness and patriotism such that they imbibe these qualities that are essential to lead their lives in the future. This paves the way to the third step which is a duty to ENERGISE the entire environment around you. Every day at dusk its best to unite your family in group meditation of TM for about 20 minutes followed by serious prayer – offer thanks to your gods (if you don’t believe it then to a supreme energy that exists or to the unified field which science has proven as a field of existence of all energies), pray together and pray from everybody – yourself, your family, other people and of course for the entire nation Bharat. It is here I quote the
prayer of Sudhindra Teerth Swamy Ji and the people following the order of Kashi Mutt as an excellent example – they have a short focused and holistic prayer. Scientifically it has been identified that chants of specific sounds (in mono syllables or poly-syllables) have a profound effect on all life forms.
One such verse that energizes – heals and strengthens 72000 energy irrigation systems (nadis) and 11 important organ systems that are essential for our healthy body.  This verse is called the MAHA MRITYUNJAYA MANTRA. Enough scientific researches on the effect of this verse have concluded that it has a profound effect on any patient’s healing of ailments/ diseases. Chanting this together with your families at a sufficiently audible level 108 times at a stretch renders its health benefits and enhanced immune system in your family and also creates a strengthened environment benefiting other too. Research studies have also shown that singing bhajans in appropriate melodies increases the ability to focus and concentration in children thus benefiting them in their studies. The day can end with a couple of such vocal renderences that also keeps your mind and body healthy. Remember the formulae for better living is “a healthy Mind gives a healthy body” over 90% of the diseases/ ailments are psychosomatic (created by our own brain).

This is not too difficult to employ, it is neither counterproductive, nor is it depleting life energies nor is it in any way harmful. During this Lockdown period should any individual apply it in a focused manner for the 21 days minimum – it becomes a habit thereby making you and all members of your family better individuals who would become intellectually, morally, spiritually, culturally and patriotically mature and robust exhibiting patience, perseverance and positivity in all you do. The times are ripe for all to make ourselves worthy individuals who can be part of Bharat’s success story. So here’s the way may you all be illumined by this way forward of mine hopefully sensitizing on the real meaning & truth behind “STAY HOME & STAY SAFE at this hour of National Health Emergency.
